The World's Biggest Signpost from Nokia
My name is Conrad Lisco, and this is my blog, where I post odds and ends, things and thoughts.
I work at R/GA in the Mobile & Emerging Platforms group. I'm most interested in the intersection of technology and culture. Addicted to location-based services. Live in Chinatown and love sneakers and street art.
Opinions are my own.
According to Tero Ojanperä, Nokia’s executive vice president of entertainment and communities, people adopt technology for three reasons: survival, social and entertainment. At the center of those things, he says, is culture. He and Nokia are making some big bets on the future of mobile, and turning Nokia into a media company. Makes sense right? Look at the success of iPod and iPhone...essentially, those devices are just a gateway for Apple to distribute content (media). Nokia, who has tremendous scale, could completely change the game.
Last year, Nokia sold 472 million cell phones and generated $70 billion in revenue, earning $7 billion in profit. It is the 88th-largest company in the world by revenue, counts more than 1.1 billion customers, sells its products in more than 150 countries, and runs an operating system translated into more than 180 different languages. Nokia's share of the global cell-phone market is greater than its next three competitors combined.
